Sandwash Basin is a inhospitable environment

Colorado has several wild horse herds. This particular 2021 photograph of a mustang mare was made in Sandwash Basin in the Northwestern part of the state while on a road trip with my friend Jonathan Steele.

The wild horse herds attract a lot of attention. There is also a lot of politics surrounding them, which I try to stay out of. The truth of the matter is that these wild horses are feral animals and not native to Colorado. They live in rough conditions too. Sandwash Basin is a inhospitable environment of mostly scrub land and very little water. The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for taking care of these horses and they frequently round up large portions of these herds for sale to the public. And therein lies the problem. Not everyone agrees with how to manage these animals.
