Ahhh, Bird Thursday.
Today’s photo is a group of Sandhill Cranes hanging out in a farmers field near Monte Vista, Colorado in March of 2019.
I go to Monte Vista to photograph the annual Sandhill Crane migration every year in March. It’s sort of a ritual trip for me. 2019 was a particularly difficult year. A week before my trip, a major blizzard hit the area and it chased off most of the cranes. I had to really work to find what few had remained. By the time I got there, the snow had melted and the birds had flown. Fortunately, I did find them.
This photograph was made with a Nikon D810 and the 200-500mm f/5.6 VR. My workhorse wildlife camera for several years and it still sits in my camera cabinet today. I love that camera. Like me, it’s old and beat up, but it gets the job done.
