Less than two weeks until my first real photography trip for the year. My annual Sandhill Crane trip to Monte Vista, Colorado.
A perfect location for birds in flight photography. Kind of a niche subject but a great way to break out of the Winter blues and spend some time with my best friends doing some photography together.
I’ll probably be using my full Nikon DSLR kit along with the Sony a6700. I’ve had the a6700 for nearly 10 months now but haven’t really put it to the test big time. Coupled with the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens and my regular assortment of Nikon DSLR gear, I should be able to produce a few good photos.
Today’s photo is from March 14, 2017 using a Nikon D750 with the 200-500mm f/5.6 VR. I’ve used a wide variety of cameras and lenses on this trip over the years. My Sandhill Crane photos have done fairly well with sales over the years. Many of my photos have been used by publishers to advertise this particular location and subject. I don’t know how many of my other photographer friends will be down there while I’m there, but I normally bump into a few people I know. We shall see. I keep such a low profile online these days, I just don’t talk to other photographers around the state a lot these days, unless I bump into them on the road or we plan something together privately.
Right now, the extended weather forecast for Monte Vista is looking good. Mild, mostly sunny weather in the upper 40’s and mid 50’s. No reports of major adverse weather between now and then. Looking like it should be a typical weather situation for the trip. Last year, we got hit with a major winter blizzard in Colorado during the trip but somehow avoided the worst of it in Monte Vista. Getting home was an adventure as the blizzard hit most of the state.
