Wild Colorado Coyote hunting in a winter field of deep snow.
The back story…
This photograph was made at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in February of 2014. I was cruising the refuge one winter morning and spotted this Coyote hunting for voles in the snow. Most of the time, his back was to me, but I sat and waited, keeping my camera on him the whole time. He would lunge nose first into the snow and come up empty then stand there and try again. I was anticipating him coming up with his meal, but he never did. He eventually turned around and walked in my direction. That’s when I captured this full frontal view of him.
The photograph was made using a Canon EOS 7D and the Sigma 150-500mm. I used a EOS 7D for a lot of my wildlife photography back then. A lot of folks complained about this camera, but the truth is that I have made more money from photos made with this camera than any other camera I have owned, and I’ve owned many different cameras. The Sigma 150-500 wasn’t that great of a lens though. I managed to squeak out a few good shots with it, but I sold it after less than a year of buying it. I also sold off that 7D many years ago to a friend and he is still using that camera today.
