Two Bulls and a Cow Moose at sunset in Northern Colorado

Happy Moose Monday.

Here’s a threesome I captured one late July evening in Northern Colorado just before sunset.

By the end of July, their antlers are growing nicely and the females and males are beginning to mingle together. The rut doesn’t begin for another month, usually around the first week of September.

Late July and early August are my favorite time of the year to look for moose. They are at their summer peak of activity at this time of year and the bulls begin introducing themselves to the cows.

Moose are temperamental, particularly the Cows, who will attack anything or anyone they feel is a threat to their calf. The mature bulls are fairly easy going until they loose their antler velvet, when the hormones kick in and competition begins for mating privileges. I show them plenty of respect and always keep a safe distance, but on occasion they will meander right by me without incident. Learning their body language is the key to success. If you respect their space, they won’t be concerned with you for the most part. Act like a fool and you can get stomped.
