I spent the day with my buddy Ricky, chasing the Union Pacific Big Boy from Sharon Springs, Kansas to Denver on October 21. The railroad was winding up their Heartland of America tour with the Big Boy. After it leaves Denver, it will return to Cheyenne, Wyoming where it is normally housed.
This is the largest and most powerful steam locomotive in the world. When it goes by, the ground trembles. Chasing this train is virtually impossible. It’s such a spectacle, it attracts people in droves where ever it goes. The best way to photograph it is to find a good spot and wait for it to go by. Once it passes your position, you’ll be hard pressed to get out ahead of it again as there will be miles of cars on the road following it.
This view of the train is near the town of Watkins, Colorado about 40 miles east of Denver. Around 4:36 in the afternoon.
