Union Pacific 844 Steam Train in Northern Colorado

Good things only last for a short while...

Another of my Union Pacific 844 photographs, from July, 2013 near La Salle, Colorado.

I had just finished up photographing this train near the town of Nunn and was chasing it South. I managed to get out ahead of the train and find this crossing along highway 85. There wasn’t a lot of time to prep this composition. I more or less pulled off the road, and stood there until it roared past me. It turned out to be one of my favorite photographs of this locomotive. Afterwords, my friend and I went to a Mexican restaurant and finished off a great morning of photography with a hot plate of great Mexican food.

For many years, it was pretty easy to chase this train between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Denver. But, it became more popular over the years, and the road traffic along this route became too congested to get ahead of the train. I eventually quit trying to chase it as a result. It was becoming dangerous. Good things only last for a short while, and once something becomes popular, it’s impossible to navigate the crowds and traffic so we find new ways and locations to work the railroads.

Photograph made with a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
