I’ve made a lot of train photographs over the years. I’m lucky to live in an area that has a number of heritage railroads to choose from.
Today, I’m thinking about the Cumbres & Toltec narrow gauge railroad that runs from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico. I had the opportunity to ride and photograph this train in July of 2009. The Cumbres & Toltec is a left-over from the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, which was a rather large railroad back in the day. When they shut down their operations 1992, most of their assets were sold off and a number of heritage railroads sprang up from their ashes.
I had planned to return to New Mexico last year during a Autumn photography trip, but that trip was aborted when I contracted COVID on the first day of the trip. This year, my friend Jonathan Steele and I have decided to give it another try.
