Mornings begin early when photographing the Sandhill Crane migration in Monte Vista.
Up at 5am to catch the wonderful breakfast at the hotel, then off to the Sandhill Crane habitat before the sun rises. I set my camera up in the dark and then wait for the sun to rise. It’s cold, 18 degrees this morning. I spot a few cattails growing in the wetlands and take my first photos of the day, just as the morning light is coming in. At sunrise it is 7:19 am in the morning. Still roosting in the shallow water in front of me, the cranes are croaking and moving around. Within 15 minutes they will have all trickled out of the pond. By 8 am, it’s time to relocate to a different area to catch the birds feeding in the fields or wetlands near the refuge.
My coffee is cold.

Another March morning in Monte Vista, Colorado.
