I’ve finished my annual photography trip to Monte Vista, Colorado.
I have a ton of photographs to edit and I am beginning to make a dent in that job.
A very pleasant and productive photography trip this year. The weather was fairly good for the duration. A little cold in the mornings, below freezing actually, but it warmed up during the days to the low to mid 50’s.
I worked the birds with my friends Jim Esten and Ricardo Muino. Two great guys and great photographers. It’s always a joy to work with either of them.
This was my first major effort to work with the Sony a6700. I also took my Nikon D850. I ended up with around 5,000 photos, of which about 4,000 were made with the Sony a6700.
The Sony camera with the 200-600mm lens was the workhorse of the trip. I’ve had this setup since May of last year but I have never really put it to a serious test with birds in flight. It did the job and I learned a few things about how to best use the combo.

As is with most of my photography trips, there’s a story to tell. This year was no exception.
One the first night there, Ricky and I had cashed in for the evening. About an hour after we fell asleep, I heard a cat meowing, At first I thought I was dreaming, then I began waking up and thought the cat was outside the hotel door. Ricky gets up and flips the lights on and tells me there’s a cat under my bed. I call the hotel front desk and inform them, and they send a maintenance guy to our room. He’s a little rough on the edges and has a long stick with a squeegee attached to the end of it. I guess he figured he would squeegee the cat out of the room, it wasn’t clear what his plan was. The hotel nigh manager comes to the room and they lifted the mattress off my bed while I hold the door open. The cat then runs out of the room and scurries on up the sidewalk. We laughed ourselves to sleep that night.
I’ll share more photos down the road. I have a lot of editing to do.
