I am planning to make my annual trip to Monte Vista, Colorado to photograph the Sandhill Crane migration in early March. The hotel is booked, I have two friends joining me and I’m feeling good after a recent surgery.
Today’s photograph is an oldie. Made in early December of 2009 in Bosque del Apache, New Mexico, this was my very first dedicated trip to photograph these birds. I did okay for a newbie back then and it hooked me on the subject.
The camera gear has sure changed since 2009. I made this photo using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II with the 70-200mm f/4L IS USM. This was more or less a target of opportunity. I had the camera hanging off my shoulder and saw these two birds pass in front of the morning moon, so I quickly raised it and made the photo. Not a work of art by any means, but it was my introduction to doing birds in flight and I caught on quickly.
