I have an ongoing project photographing ghost towns and abandoned places in the state of Colorado.
I make it a point to visit some of these places 2 or 3 times a year, or photograph them when I find them near an area I’m traveling through. I don’t think I can document everything though, Colorado is a big place.
Some of the abandoned structures or towns I come across are often in some state of preservation. Local volunteers try to keep the history intact, but it’s not easy and there are not a lot of public funds to spend on these pursuits.
I’ve been recently going through my photographs from Crested Butte, Colorado. Crested Butte is an interesting place and a prime location for Autumn photography.
This particular cabin is near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. I made this photograph in 2014 while on an Autumn photography trip. The cabin in the photo is still there today but it has deteriorated since I photographed it on that 2014 trip. Today, it is nearly collapsed and it appears to be destined to become a pile of rotting lumber and junk. It is kind of sad in a way. Watching the past dissolve into the earth, but I think that is our destiny. Everything returns to the earth. At least somebody will know it once existed and maybe get a look at the past through my photographs.
I don’t know the history of this place. Perhaps one day, I’ll meet someone who can tell me a story about it. Perhaps not. I’ll try to find that story, someday, before I return to the earth.
