I had an interesting encounter at this building back in August of 2014 when this photo was made. I entered through the doorway to look inside and there was a young bull moose in the building. Why he felt he needed to be in there was his secret, but I can tell you I scared the heck out of him and he scared the heck out of me. He came bolting past me and out the door and off into the woods. I’m lucky I didn’t get stomped.
Teller City is a ghost town located in Jackson County, Colorado, approximately 25 miles southeast of the town of Gould. The town was founded in the late 1870s after the discovery of gold in the area.
At its peak, Teller City had a population of around 5,000 people, and the town boasted several stores, saloons, hotels, and other businesses. The town was also home to several mines, which produced gold and other minerals.
By the turn of the century, the mining boom had begun to decline, and the town began to shrink. By the 1920s, most of the residents had left, and the town became a ghost town.
This is a very remote location, situated high in the mountains up a long, bumpy dirt road. I needed a 4×4 to get to it. Most of the year it’s covered with snow. The area around this spot is full of moose though.
