A model town, so to speak. It's a model junk yard now.
Abandoned car in the ghost town of Model.

This is a substantial ghost town. It has numerous abandoned buildings and houses, along with a good collection of abandoned junk. It’s very easy to find also. It’s on the historical Santa Fe Trail, along US-350 not very far from Trinidad, Colorado. Well worth the visit.

Model is an abandoned unincorporated village in Las Animas County, Colorado. The Model Post Office serving ZIP Code 81059 was in operation from 1912 to 2021, and was the last business or service standing there for many years. The community originally was a planned, or “model” community, hence the name. Model is a far shot from its heyday during the days of the railroad. It originally got its name Model because it was going to provide inspiration and the base for other seemingly plain towns to follow. A model town, so to speak. It’s a model junk yard now.
