Boggsville, located in Bent County, Colorado, holds a significant place in the history of southeastern Colorado, even though it is now considered a ghost town.
Founded in 1866, Boggsville was the first permanent non-fortified settlement in southeastern Colorado. It is situated on the banks of the Purgatoire River, near its confluence with the Arkansas River. Today, it’s located about two miles south of present-day Las Animas on Colorado Highway 101.
On a side note, I’ve just returned from a 600 mile road trip to photograph several ghost towns on the Eastern Colorado plains. Boggsville was one of my stops on that trip. One of the more interesting ghost town locations in Eastern Colorado, I walked around this site for about an hour. Very easy location to get to, in a otherwise desolate part of the state.
