About Photographer Gary Gray

Photograph by Jonathan Steele.

Gary first learned photography as a young teenager using his fathers 35mm Pentax SLR and Rangefinder cameras. His father taught him the basics at the age of 13 and to this day Gary still owns his fathers Voigtlander Vito III rangefinder camera. Gary improved his knowledge during high school by being a member of the High School photography club.

After high school, Gary joined the US Navy and as a young man began working with 35mm stereographic cameras and 35mm SLR cameras.

Gary is US Navy Veteran and electronics engineer by training. After leaving the Navy, Gary worked for The Wall Street Journal from 1981-2007 in many technical and production management roles until his retirement in 2007. During his time at the WSJ, Gary worked extensively with Satellite Communications Systems, Newspaper Printing Systems, Digital Imaging Systems, Information Technology Systems, Technical and Production Management.

Since retiring from The Wall Street Journal, Gary is a wildlife & nature photographer based in Colorado who specializes in capturing images of moose and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Gary is known for his stunning images of moose in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, which have been featured in numerous publications and online galleries.

In addition to his wildlife photography, Gary is also an accomplished landscape photographer, and his images of Colorado’s rugged mountain terrain have earned him a reputation as one of the state’s premier landscape photographers.

Gary is a highly published writer and photographer whose work has been featured in over 700 publications around the world, including National Geographic, Newsweek, Associated Press, Outdoor Photographer, Colorado Outdoors, F-Stoppers, Readers Digest, Out There Colorado, The Colorado Encyclopedia and many other television, Internet and print publications. See Gary’s list of publishing credits below. Gary is the most published commercial photographer in the State of Colorado.

Gary’s photography is characterized by its dramatic lighting, attention to detail, and ability to capture the unique personalities and behaviors of his subjects. He often spends hours tracking and observing individual moose, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to capture an image that tells a story.

Gary is also the founder of North American Nature, Wildlife & Landscape Photographers Association, a Facebook photography group. He is also a frequent speaker at photography clubs and workshops, where he shares his knowledge and passion for wildlife and nature photography with other photographers.
